How do we source critical attention and focus on any critical task that needs to be delivered in a 'Tik-Tok' world that can hold attention and focus only for not beyond 3 minutes ... and beyond that time, another idea emerges to divert attention and distract focus on to some new theme ?
'Focus' scarcity.
We live in a world of acute Attention Defeciency Paradox - where serious attention is critical for success but is unfortunately available only in very short-bursts between multiple interesting themes competing for attention.
The modern world craves our attention—but only in short bursts is that available. To give your attention to any one thing for too long is failing and it seems, one of the critical contributory factors is 'FOMO'.... the fear of missing out.
When one is not clear about ones choice of the most important thing one wishes to achieve from an attractive list of multiple things vying for attention, one is bound to lose out on focus. Clear choices being not made, makes the second and the third and maybe also the fourth alternatives pranace around as interestingly as the first for attention. It is the fear of missing out on something else of equal interest that makes one lose focus on the theme that one has opted for. This happens particularly, when one has not invested sufficient time and attention to choose and determine the theme to dedicate one's energies on.
Whilst there are many factors that collectively contribute to 'Focus' - I believe investing disproportionately high time to determine and select from a long list of attractive alternatives - the one that you wish deep down to opt for, indeed determines success. Once chosen there should be no looking back and/or repentence about missing out on something else that one consciously and educatedly chose to not opt for. Once choice is made, pushing on the paddle that will provide the requisite energy dedication, perseverence, resilience and discipline will make you succeed .
Rightly wisdom of an African quote says .. merely because you have two legs does not mean that you attempt to climb two trees at the same time. Climb one and succeed, first. The other, leave for another moment.
“Concentrate all your thoughts upon the work in hand. The sun’s rays do not burn until brought to a focus.” – Alexander Graham Bell said it.
Hope it rings our bell , as well !!
